Cornell University issues 'Level 1: Limited Water Use Advisory’ for Campus

waterfall in fall creek gorge

Cornell University is currently monitoring the abnormally dry state of our region after a prolonged period of lacking rainfall. To raise awareness of the decreased quantity of our campus water supply, Fall Creek, the Cornell University Water System has issued a Level 1: Limited Water Use Advisory to encourage water conservation during this timeUntil further notice, Cornell Utilities strongly encourages every member of the campus community to conserve water usage. For example:

  • Report any water leakages in university buildings as soon as possible through Cornell’s service request system, including running toilets, leaking faucets, or other water-related issues on-campus or in your building. A single slow drip can waste up to 10 gallons per day.
  • Do not let faucets run unattended.
  • Limit your overall use of water to essential needs only.

Health and safety are still a priority. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, please continue washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

If conditions persist, Level 2: Water Use Restrictions may be issued to the Cornell community. Please know the Cornell Water System has contingencies in place to continue essential service, and your adherence to this advisory will help ease the demand on our water system.

“While global climate change and regional weather patterns stress water systems statewide, this is a reminder that water resource management is ultimately a local responsibility. It is on all of us to be literate and engaged in where our water comes from and how it is used.” Brian G Rahm, Director, New York State Water Resources Institute
