Back to Facilities Inventory documentation
The replacement facilities inventory system which has been used first during the 2023-2024 fiscal year ending June 30, 2024 no longer uses "site codes", sometimes referred to as precincts, to classify active facilities by geographic region.
Previous Geographic Classification System of Facilities
The facilities inventory site codes were retired as of June 30, 2023 and replaced with a new three-tier hierarchy required by the replacement facilities inventory system. Each active facility is now classified by a region, a district and a site. Note that the new sites are not the same as the previous "site codes" even though they have a similar name. Table 1 below shows a number of examples of facilities and their region, district, and site as well as the retired "site code".
Table 1. Example Facility Classifications
Facility Code | Facility Name | Region | District | Site | Retired Site Code |
2023 | Humphreys Service Bldg | Ithaca Campus | South Campus Maplewood | Cntrl Heating Plant Sply | 29 - Ithaca Main Campus |
1028B | Bradfield Hall | Ithaca Campus | Ag Quad | Ag Quad East | 29 - Ithaca Main Campus |

2360 | Emma and Georgina Bloomberg C | New York State | New York City | NYTC 1 | 83 - New York City (within 5 Boroughs) |
2802 | Johnson C Birds & Biodiversity | Tompkins County | Dryden | Ornithology | 34 - Sapsucker Woods |

Site Code 29
One commonly used classification was the site code 29 corresponding to the Ithaca main campus. This classification exists now as the region with a descriptive name of "Ithaca Campus".
At the top level of the new three-tiered hierarchy is a short list of eleven "Regions". The regions expand outwards from Ithaca, New York. For example, the region called "Ithaca Campus" contains all facilities in a geographic region designated as the core campus.
Regions for Other Parts of Tompkins County
Outside the "Ithaca Campus" region is the "Tompkins County" region. The "Tompkins County" region contains all facilities in Tompkins County which are not already contained in the "Ithaca Campus" region. In other words, the Tompkins County region has a hole in it which is the "Ithaca Campus" region.
Region for the AgriTech Campus
The "Geneva Campus" region contains the facilities in the AgriTech campus in the area around Geneva, New York.
Regions for Other Parts of New York State
Extending outwards beyond the "Ithaca Campus", "Tompkins County" and "Geneva Campus" regions is a region called "New York State". The New York State region contains all facilities in the State of New York which are not already contained within the "Ithaca Campus", "Tompkins County" and "Geneva Campus" regions.
Within the "New York State" region, there are facilities inventory districts corresponding to the ten New York State OSC economic regions (link to map). The "Southern Tier" district contains all facilities in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Steuben, and Tioga counties but not the facilities in Tompkins County since those are classified in the "Tompkins County" region.
Similarly, the Finger Lakes district of the New York State region contains all facilities in Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Yates counties and Ontario County but not the facilities in Ontario County associated with the AgriTech campus which are classified in the "Geneva Campus" region.
Region for Cornell Tech Campus
Facilities associated with the Cornell Tech campus are categorized in the "New York State" region and the "New York City" district.
List of Facilities Inventory Regions
Table 2 below shows the complete list of the 11 geographic regions used to categorize facilities.
Table 2. List of facilities inventory region codes and descriptions.
Region Code | Region Description | How Used |
CMP | Ithaca Campus | A large number of facilities on the core campus in Ithaca, New York have this region. |
TMPK | Tompkins County | Facilities located in Tompkins county which are not included in the core "Ithaca Campus" have this region. In other words, there are many facilities which are located in Tompkins county which will not be classified using this region code because they are part of the core "Ithaca Campus" region. |
GNVA | Geneva Campus | Facilities at the AgriTech campus in Geneva, New York have this region. |
NYS | New York State | Facilities located in New York State which do not fall into any of the following three regions: Ithaca campus, Tompkins county, or Geneva campus. Facilities in Tompkins County have either the Ithaca Campus or the Tompkins County region. |
US1 | Northeast | Facilities located in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont have this region. This region does not include facilities in New York State. |
