McGraw Hall Renovation

Overview

The purpose of this project is to renovate McGraw Hall completely. One of Cornell's original buildings, this 1868 structure housed the Departments of History and Anthropology, the Cornell Institute for Archeology and Material Studies, the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines, and the China and Asia-Pacific Studies program. The result is poor flow through a collection of near-random spaces that are limited for their intended use and in some cases, limited in access (mezzanine with no ADA access). The project goals are to preserve the building's historic quality, reduce energy consumption, resolve code and accessibility deficiencies, maximize efficiency of interior spaces, create a strong presence for A&S, introduce a new structural system that allows for flexibility, and provide active learning environments that foster interaction and transparency between spaces for interest and engagement. The project is scheduled for substantial completion in January 2028.
