Campus Mail

Intra-Campus Mail

Campus mail is unstamped, internal mail is picked up and delivered between designated university buildings every business day. USPS mail and private carrier mail (UPS, FedEx, etc.) are not handled by Mail Services unless it is undeliverable first-class US mail with a Cornell University address.

Getting Started

  • Contact us if you need recycled campus mail envelopes. New envelopes are available through the Cornell Store.
  • Campus mail must be able to fit within a 9 3/4" x 12 3/4" envelope (standard campus mail envelope).
    • Use blue or black ink or labels (if possible) for addressing.
    • Secure by tucking in the flap or sealing the envelope with tape.
    • Do not use staples to seal envelopes.
  • Separate all campus and meter mail from outgoing USPS stamped mail.
  • Band mass campus mailings (25 or more pieces) by building. For example, 21 pieces to Sibley Hall, 18 pieces to Goldwin Smith Hall, 34 pieces to Mann Library, etc.
  • Please email or call ahead (607-254-8284) if you have more than one tub of outgoing mail.

You cannot use campus mail for the following items:

  • Packages or parcels.
  • Personal mail (catalogs, greeting cards, food, or other items unrelated to university business)
  • Books, tubes, envelopes larger than a campus envelope (9 3/4" x 12 3/4"),  or odd-sized items.
  • Cash (or other negotiable paper)
  • Hazardous materials

Proper Mail Addressing

Mail delivered to the university must bear the correct name, department, and building or street address on each piece. Insufficient addressing may be delayed or returned to the sender.

  • Use the complete campus address and avoid abbreviations; many buildings on campus share the same name.

Mail Forwarding: When an individual changes their address it is their responsibility to:

  • Update information in Workday and other internal and external sources.
  • Notify contacts for internal mailing lists (HR, DDD, Faculty List).
  • Notify mailroom staff, if applicable.

Requirements

Cornell addresses and campus mail services are for official university business only, and not intended for commercial, personal, or private mail; for commercial advertising for organizations; or individuals not affiliated with the university. Mailings may be reviewed for consistency with these policies. Campus mailings not in compliance can be removed.
