Facilities Inventory: Lactation Rooms
Content created: February 27, 2025
Currently, there is not a designation for lactation/mother’s rooms in the room type categories. Instead, we track these types of facilities through a Yes/No flag. This flag is located on the "Additional Details" tab of the Room views in the facilities inventory system.

Cornell’s Human Resources Division of Work/Life tracks and maintains a directory of rooms with details about the facility space. If you are adding a room through a renovation or new build, please contact their office at worklife@cornell.edu to have the space added to the online directory.
The following designations are not exhaustive but should provide a clear direction when coding the spaces.
Room Type Code Designation
- If the room use is restricted to use for lactation purposes, then typically the room is coded to "315 – Office Service".
- If the lactation space is located inside of a public restroom in a separate seating area, then the room will be coded "031 – Public Toilet".
- If the room is used as a general-purpose lounge but is scheduled and lockable or converted to a lactation space when needed, then "650 – Lounge" should be used.
- If the room is generally serving as a department special service but is scheduled and lockable or converted to a lactation space when needed, then "260 – Department Special Service" can be used.
- If the room is used as a conference room but is scheduled and lockable or converted to a lactation space when needed, then "350 – Conference Room" should be used.
Room KFS Org Designation
- The room KFS org designation should continue to follow the department assigned spaces within a facility. If a facility has multiple orgs, then the room should be assigned to the same org that is responsible for updating the inventory of the space.
- If the room is located within a "031 – Public Restroom", then the assigned Org should follow the same protocols for other public restrooms in the same facility.
Function Code Designation
- If the room use is restricted to use for lactation purposes, the function code should follow the primary function of the space and its users which is based on the group that the lactation room is supporting.
- If the space is located inside of a public restroom in a separate seating area, then the room will be coded to "9.1 – Building Space Non-Assignable".
- If the room is generally used for other purposes but is scheduled and lockable or converted to a lactation space when needed, then the function code should follow the typical usage of the room.
Lactation Room Checkbox
The individual responsible for managing the space inventory’s annual updates is responsible for managing the Lactation Room flag located on the Additional Details tab in the 1.30 Room Updates view.
Update Human Resources with Changes
This individual should ensure that the addition or removal of a lactation room from inventory is sent to Cornell’s Human Resources Office – Work/Life for an update to the online directory.
