Duffield Hall Expansion
Project Description
The Duffield Expansion and Renovation will combine three facilities into a single unified, aesthetically cohesive complex to provide new space to support the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering’s (ECE) research and collaborative culture. A key goal is to create a distinctive architectural and landscape design and establish a prominent presence at this important campus gateway. Construction will include facade replacement, interior renovations, creation of a Quantum research basement level, as well as a new addition and central multipurpose pavilion. A mix of high, medium, and low intensity renovations are planned for the existing buildings, including new mechanical systems. The centerpiece of this project is a new one-story multipurpose pavilion. A clear connection between this space, the existing four-story Duffield Atrium and Phillips Hall will integrate the buildings into one seamless complex, while maintaining unique identity spaces for the College of Engineering and ECE. The project will double the amount of research space available to ECE and provide a variety of collaboration spaces. Academic spaces include new and updated dry and robotics labs, classrooms and offices. The design involves key HVAC, building envelope and code upgrades to the existing building and integrating the project with Cornell’s ongoing campus-wide sustainability and clean energy initiatives.
