    Julie Parsons

    Within easy reach in Juliet Parsons’ office in the Cornell Recycle Center is a four-inch ringed Commencement binder full of maps of Schoellkopf field and stadium, Barton Hall and bus security barriers; contacts across campus; to-do lists and schedules; and placements of podiums, staging, signs and even garbage cans. Another binder holds similar directions for the 400-600 events that occur during Reunion Weekend, organized by each class year’s officers, each using different vendors and venues.

    As Facilities Management’s event manager, Parsons is responsible for making it easier for Commencement, Reunion and all other campus event planners to focus on the details of their event rather than the logistics that are similar for every event.

    For this, Parsons needs the trust of event planners, and for them to trust her, Parsons needs to act with integrity, one of the skills Cornell has identified as integral to the success of Cornell leaders and staff. At the last...

    Cornell Staff Graduates

    Fourteen staff members are receiving a master’s degree, six are receiving bachelor’s degrees and two an associate’s degree. Half earned their degrees at Cornell through the Employee Degree Program, and half at other institutions through the Tuition Assistance Program.

    All graduates balanced studies with personal demands at home and performance expectations at work, said Mary Opperman, vice president and chief human resources officer. In the process, they immersed themselves in a learning environment, tapping into the “essence of our university enterprise – learning and knowledge,” Opperman said. “And you have met the resulting challenges with gusto. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. We are very proud of your accomplishments …. Today is proof that the best staff in the world choose Cornell.”

    Staff earning a master’s degree at Cornell:

    • Lt. Col. David Barber, master of professional studies, Army ROTC Commander;
    • Mandy Bennison,...

    Steve Develn

    Steve Devlen, assistant director, Facilities Management, shared the words that come to his mind when he thinks of CLASP, including courage, appreciation, friendships and confidence.

    Through an innovative program where staff members achieve learning goals by working with student mentors, Mark Robinson shared his narratives of local history through the creation of a blog. Leila Ellis, a certified arborist hoping to use that certification in future jobs, learned how to create a resume and cover letter. Neil Aiken worked on a science fiction creative writing piece.

    Whether they honed their writing, math or computer skills or increased their typing or notetaking abilities, the Cornell employees who participated in this year’s Community Learning and Service Partnership (CLASP) program all had one thing in common, said Steve Devlen, assistant director, Facilities Management: courage. Other...
